Can Apple See Your Hidden Photos?
Apple says it doesn't access your photos, but in iCloud the answer depends on one setting. What Apple can and can't see, and how to keep it out.
Not on your iPhone. Apple says it doesn't access your photos, and Photos analyses faces and scenes on the device. In iCloud it depends on one setting. With standard protection, Apple holds the encryption keys and can hand iCloud content to authorities with a warrant. With Advanced Data Protection, your photos are end-to-end encrypted and Apple can't decrypt them. Hiding a photo changes none of this.
Hiding doesn’t change who can see a photo
The Hidden album controls where a photo shows up on your iPhone. It doesn’t change how the photo is stored or encrypted, on the device or in iCloud. (More on that in Is the iPhone Hidden Album Encrypted?)
So the real question is: what can Apple see of any of your photos? That depends on where they are.
On your iPhone
Apple’s privacy page for Photos says plainly: “Apple does not access your photos or videos.”
The smart features run on your iPhone. Photos recognises faces and sorts scenes, like beaches or dogs, using on-device analysis. Your iPhone also encrypts what it stores. As long as photos stay only on your iPhone, Apple isn’t holding a copy.
In iCloud, it depends on one setting
If iCloud Photos is on, your photos, hidden ones included, are stored on Apple’s servers. How they’re protected there depends on whether you’ve turned on Advanced Data Protection.
| Standard protection (default) | Advanced Data Protection | |
|---|---|---|
| How photos are encrypted | In transit and on the server | End-to-end |
| Who holds the keys | Apple | Only your trusted devices |
| Can Apple decrypt them? | Yes | No |
| Can Apple hand them over with a warrant? | Yes, Apple says iCloud content may be provided | No, Apple says it can’t decrypt them |
A few details matter:
- Shared Albums don’t support Advanced Data Protection, so photos you put in a Shared Album stay under standard protection.
- Some metadata stays readable, even with Advanced Data Protection on. Apple says it may keep limited information related to these services.
- Apple can’t recover your data, because it no longer has the keys. You’ll need a recovery contact or a recovery key set up before you turn it on.
Don’t forget iCloud Backup
If iCloud Photos is off but iCloud Backup is on, Apple says your backup may include the photos and videos in your library. Backups follow the same rule: Apple holds the keys under standard protection, and backups are end-to-end encrypted with Advanced Data Protection. (Switching phones? See How to Move a Photo Vault to a New iPhone.)
Does Apple scan your photos?
In 2021 Apple announced a system to detect known child abuse images in iCloud Photos. After strong criticism from privacy and security experts, Apple said in December 2022 that it would not go ahead with it.
Enhanced Visual Search
One Photos feature does reach Apple’s servers. Enhanced Visual Search recognises landmarks and places in your photos.
Apple says it sends an encrypted mathematical summary of part of a photo, called an embedding, and not the photo itself. Apple’s servers can’t decrypt it, and Apple says it doesn’t keep the request. If you’d rather it didn’t run at all, go to Settings → Apps → Photos and turn off Enhanced Visual Search.
How to keep your photos away from Apple
- Turn on Advanced Data Protection in your iCloud settings. This is the single biggest step. Set up a recovery contact or a recovery key first.
- Keep private photos out of Shared Albums, because they stay under standard protection.
- Turn off Enhanced Visual Search, if you’d rather nothing leaves your iPhone.
- Use a vault that encrypts before anything leaves the phone. Then even a standard-protection backup holds only scrambled data.
The last one is how Hidlet’s backup works. Your vault is encrypted on your iPhone with a key made from your pattern, before it’s saved to your own iCloud. Apple stores only data it can’t read, whichever iCloud setting you use. Hidlet is coming soon to the App Store.

Frequently asked questions
Do Apple employees look at my photos?
Apple says it does not access your photos or videos. With standard iCloud protection, Apple does hold the keys to your iCloud photos, which is why it can respond to legal requests for them.
Are hidden photos treated differently in iCloud?
No. Hidden photos sync and are encrypted exactly like your other photos. Hiding only changes where they show up in the Photos app.
Does Apple scan my iCloud photos?
Apple proposed a system to detect child abuse images in iCloud Photos in 2021 and said in December 2022 that it would not go ahead with it.
Can the police get my iCloud photos?
With standard protection, Apple says iCloud content may be provided in response to a valid search warrant. With Advanced Data Protection, Apple says it cannot decrypt iCloud Photos, so it can't provide them.
